The Three Friends
三友图
Chinese Ink on Rice Paper/宣纸水墨画
138 x 69 cm

The Three Friends is a Chinese painting that draws inspiration from the famous figures of the Han Dynasty—Xiao He, Zhang Liang, and Han Xin—three key contributors to the founding of the Han Empire. In this artwork, bamboo, plum blossoms, and pine trees are depicted together, symbolizing the enduring and deep friendship shared by these historical figures. These three plants, known as the “Three Friends of Winter” (岁寒三友), are traditional symbols in Chinese culture, representing strength, resilience, and integrity, especially in difficult times.

The combination of bamboo, which stands tall and bends without breaking, plum blossoms that bloom in the cold of winter, and pine trees that remain evergreen, signifies a friendship that is steadfast and everlasting, much like the bond between Xiao He, Zhang Liang, and Han Xin. Their unity, strength, and loyalty in helping to establish the Han Dynasty are mirrored in the symbolism of the plants, which thrive even in harsh conditions.

The painting beautifully captures the spirit of unshakable friendship, eternal trust, and loyalty, a tribute to the timeless virtues these three figures embodied.
