Chinese Ink on Rice Paper/宣纸水墨画
97 x 60 cm
In Pulau Ubin (乌敏岛), Shen captures the peaceful beauty of Pulau Ubin, one of Singapore’s last rural islands in the north-east. At the center is the last authentic Tudor-style house in Singapore, highlighted with bright red roof tiles that stand out against the softer ink tones of the landscape.
The house is surrounded by lush trees, winding paths, and tall coconut palms, showing the island’s natural charm. On the right, a jetty stretches into calm waters, a familiar sight for visitors arriving by boat. Small red boats near the shore echo the red roof, creating balance in the scene.
A lone figure sits quietly near the boats, reflecting the island’s simple and peaceful lifestyle, a contrast to the busy city. Shen blends traditional Chinese brushwork and calligraphy with local scenery, paying tribute to a way of life that is slowly disappearing.
