Adam Shen Xu Dong/沈旭东 ( b.1965)

The Scroll of Everlasting Joy
长乐图
Chinese Ink on Rice Paper/宣纸水墨画
68 x 68 cm

The Scroll of Everlasting Joy (长乐图) evokes the timeless spirit of scholarly retreat and the philosophical ideals of harmony between humanity and nature. Through masterful brushwork and a dynamic interplay of ink tones and mineral pigments, this piece captures a secluded mountain dwelling nestled amidst pine trees, beneath sweeping, cloud-filled skies and jade-toned peaks.

Shen’s use of traditional Chinese landscape painting techniques (山水画, shanshuihua) reflects a meditative approach to both composition and meaning. The stylized natural forms, expressive brushstrokes, and poetic inscription combine to suggest a world beyond the material—a refuge for the cultivated mind.

Shen’s statement about this artwork:

“长乐图是一幅表现文人墨客归隐山林,悟道天地间、与大自然为伴的闲适、快乐生活。”
“The Scroll of Everlasting Joy portrays the retreat of scholars and poets into the mountains, where they contemplate the mysteries of heaven and earth, and live a life of ease and joy in harmony with nature.”
